In 2007, we had our first intake of 60 children at Hunar Ghar. They had never been to school before and we were determined that they should have every opportunity to fulfil their potential by learning in a safe and inspiring environment.

But more than 50% of the children were malnourished and rates of skin, respiratory and diarrhoeal disease were extremely high. As a consequence, absence due to illness was high and concentration of children when they were in class was low. It was clear that providing fantastic lessons would be meaningless without engaging with the health and social challenges faced by the children and their families. Read More
