We’re excited to be starting a new supporters’ programme, offering anyone who chooses to donate £10 a month (or more) to become a Friend of Educate for Life. We had been inviting regular donors to follow the story of an individual child at Hunar Ghar, however, our Friends will follow not just one Hunar Ghar student, but a whole class.
We believe that by sharing in the ups and downs of a whole class of children, our Friends will gain a much richer insight into the Bakhel community as a whole. Friends will follow the same class of children as they progress through Hunar Ghar school, starting in Balwadi (Reception). They will receive quarterly updates with information about individual pupils, their families and the wider community, as well as photos and links to short videos, which will bring what is going on in Hunar Ghar and Bakhel to life. We hope that these regular communications will increase the sense of connection that our supporters feel to the Bakhel community. Our updates will provide a true picture of what rural development is like in a highly challenging area and will show how our interventions make a real difference to day to day life as well as to the future of Bakhel.
We wouldn’t be able to deliver all our interventions without the support of our donors and we are incredibly grateful for all the donations we receive. Regular support enables us to budget effectively and plan our work, giving us confidence that we can make and deliver on firm commitments to the Bakhel community. 100% of money donated by Friends of Educate to Life goes directly to our operational costs in India. Friends of Educate for Life will have an amazing multi-level impact:
Individual impact: Change the lives of individual children
£120 a year is our cost per child at Hunar Ghar. It covers: the cost of their uniform; daily nutritious lunches; their books and materials; their teacher’s training ; class trips and experiences; all childhood vaccinations, and regular screening by paediatricians and eye and ear testing.
Community impact: Transform a rural village
By sustaining the cost of one child, you sustain Hunar Ghar, which also acts as a hub for integrated community development projects. These include: regular mobile health clinics with access to a female doctor; referral and follow-up systems, where we personally escort ill people to hospitals to get specialist care and to ensure it has been effective; a safe pregnancy and motherhood programme; women’s self-help groups, which economically empower women; the provision of safe drinking water; and fruit tree and vegetable seed distribution
National impact: Lead change in schools across India
Hunar Ghar is an exceptionally successful rural school and is becoming an integrated development role model for the government and other charities across India. We have demonstrated that it is possible to have a well performing school in a resource poor rural location as long as teaching staff are supported and the local community is fully engaged. We are partnering with national organisations to embed our evidence based systematic approach in school networks across India. We’re also working with the government to change how rural education is delivered. This will lead to tens of thousands of children having better learning opportunities.
We’d love to be Friends with you and promise to share stories, always be honest and to be there for the long term. Become a Friend of Educate for Life today and start a life-changing friendship that will give you a deep sense of meaning and children in rural India new opportunities for their futures.
