Whilst we recognise that much of what makes Hunar Ghar so great is its specificity to its context, we believe that a lot of the work we do there is replicable in other schools. One of the long term aims of having a space like Hunar Ghar in which experimentation is possible, is to start generating data that supports our anecdotal evidence that children at Hunar Ghar do better than child at other local schools. We’d be amoung the first to raise objecting to the idea of all the fabulous things going on at Hunar Ghar being reduced to numbers and statistics, but we also recognise that here-say isn’t enough to change national education policies – data and technical analysis of our work will, in time, provide compelling evidence in support of changing education paradigms.
What’s important to remember is that replicability doesn’t mean simply copying what we’ve done at Hunar Ghar (although a lot would be readily transferable), but understanding and using our experience and approach. What’s special about Hunar Ghar isn’t what people but the reasons behind what they do, acting and approaching things in an open-minded and accepting way, where teachers and coordinators are learners as much as the children are. There’s no instruction manual for that, but it is possible to construct systems which create positive spaces for people to more readily approach their work in such a positive manner.
